Next Comes Curtains… For Real!

Decorating on a budget

RE: decorating on a budget

Hi guy…..Im baaaaaack. Did you miss me?

Window treatments are essential in a bedroom since they add privacy, adjust the lighting, and maintain the temperature in your room etc

When it comes to window treatment majority of us always think in terms of curtains right?           I know, however, there are over 14 different types of window treatment to choose from apart from curtain (story for another day)

Since we are talking about affordability, we will stick with the very common option of curtain (drapes)

Sheer drapes (VOILE) tend to be significantly less expensive than your heavier window treatments (300 naira/yard) and they allow a lot more light into the room, even when they are closed. You can purchase them at just about anywhere along any major road in Lagos metropolis, and they are easy to install on your basic curtain rod.

You do need to be careful with sheer drapes because they are sheer (see thru), and therefore, not ideal options for privacy in your bedroom. However, they will work great for most families in the main living areas of the house: kitchen, living room, sitting room, entry, dining room, and wherever else you have windows.

Cheap Window Treatment Ideas 1 Make Your Own Drapes

If you have a sewing machine and basic proficiency, it is really easy to make your own inexpensive window treatments. All you need to purchase is the fabric, and you just need to hem the edges and sew loops onto the top (or slits through the top, if you prefer that method).

Cheap Window Treatment Ideas 2 Use Old Fabrics

Even cheaper than just making your own drapes with fabric you purchased is using old fabric you already have in your home. If you have some sheets for a size of bed that you no longer have, convert them into drapes for a room. Similarly, if you find yourself with tablecloths that would look better on windows, spoil yourself. Dig into your closet, boxes, Ghana must go or wherever you store old clothes. You should find one or more set of old aso-ebi (Ankara, kente, batik) that can be converted onto a cute curtain if that fails ask you mama. I remember converting an old agbada into a shower curtain once.

Cheap Window Treatment Ideas: Be Flexible

The most important thing to consider when looking for cheap window treatments is that you should be flexible. Your rooms don’t all have to match completely, and a funky look will give it character. As long as you like it, that’s all that really matters. Your curtains don’t have to touch the floor. Mid length curtains are in this season. And there will be in for a while.

How to Sew a Throw Pillow Cover

The good thing about pillow covers is that you could make them yourself. Here you will see ten easy steps so as to stitch a throw pillow cover. First, take a look at the supplies you will require to make your throw pillow cover. Remember that you may have to alter the measurements depending on the size of your pillow covers.
• 1 ¼ yards of 45″ fabric or 1 yard of 55″ fabric
• 2 ½ yards of trim
• 1 drinking glass
• 1 pencil
• 1 sewing machine, sufficient thread, few pins, 1 pair of scissors
• 1 iron with the iron board
• 1 rotary cutter, 1 mat
Step 1 – Cut the fabric into four parts – one for the front, one for the back and two smaller rectangular portions that you will need for the sides.

Step 2 – In order to make the process of sewing and turning easier, make the corners of the pillow covers round. Use your pencil and trace the rim of the glass on the inner side of the material. Mark all corners of the square piece and only two corners of the rectangular cut-outs.

Step 3 – Cut along the lines and if you wish to quicken the process, put two pieces together and cut them together, though for precision I would suggest you do one at a time.

Step 4 – Next you will need to use the overlong stitch or the zigzag stitch along the edges of each piece of fabric to keep it from fraying and to reduce thickness at the seams. Do this to all the edges. But leave out the straight edge of the rectangle.

Step 5 – A polished hem is required for the straight edges since they will be exposed. Fold ¼” or 3/8″ from the edges twice, to encase the rugged ends and stitch them down with the help of the straight stitch.

Step 6 – Now you have to pin in the trims. Begin at the bottom of the pillow which is also the right side of the fabric and carefully pin the trim ensuring that the sewing band stays on the outside. Use pins frequently so that the trim is not stretched. The pillow will be imperfect near the edges if it is too tight.

Step 7 – Next you must pin the whole pillow cover so you can prepare it for sewing. Place the rectangular piece facing downwards. Line the corners and pin carefully, making sure the material is not stretched.

Step 8 – Do the same to the second piece of rectangular material. You will notice the hemmed edges overlap. Remove all the pins while doing this so there is no trouble while sewing.

Step 9 – With the help of a seam allowance, sew all around the pillow. You can use a zipper foot if the trims or piping near the seam are too bulky. Before you sew the fabric, remove all the pins. Your needle could break and your sewing machine could be damaged if run on pins.

Step 10 – Now that your pillow cover is ready you can put your pillow form inside it. Slide it inside and yank the corners until the fit is right and you are done

How to measure Furniture to make sure it fits your space

sofa cartoon
It’s not easy to determine if a sofa will fit through a door or up a flight of stairs or into an elevator.

The most important lengths of the sofa are: the sofa width and the height of the sofa’s back (the back of the sofa when you’re sitting down – measure from floor to top of back).

• First, Measure the dimensions of the sofa: height, width and length, then you need to measure the height, from the floor to the top of the sofa’s back.

• Measure the dimensions of the opening, whether it’s a door or stairwell or elevator door.

If the sofa’s back height is longer than the door’s width, then the sofa’s width will need to be narrower than the door’s width.

For example, a door’s width is 45″ and the sofa’s width is 48″ and the sofa back height is 40″. This means you can turn the sofa so that the sofa’s back is facing the ceiling.

The sofa should slide through as long as the inside space will accommodate it (hallway or foyer).

If both the width and the back height are too long for the width of the door, then you need to consider the sofa’s length. Measure the length of the sofa and the height of the door opening. The sofa’s length will need to be shorter than the door’s height.

Also check the entrance way to see how much room you have to maneuver – there should be at least a foot or more of space on either side of the doorway in order to shimmy the sofa through. If the inside space is a narrow hallway, the couch may not fit.

If for some reason, even after you have taken the precautions to measure you find that your Sofa doesn’t fit, or if you simply “must have that piece”, feel free to give us a call. At ChicCarpenta we firmly believe that size doesn’t matter and we will be more than happy to help you get that piece of furniture inside your home where it belongs.

Apartment Therapy

Most Lagosians know something about the problems of living in a small apartment –from friends or personal experience, or simply as general knowledge. Tiny living spaces are a constant reality in lasgidi where square footage is valuable, older buildings get split up into smaller units, or  where your budget may get you a self-contain apartment. When it comes to furnishing these little places, the efficiency idea tends to disappear; there’s nothing time and labor-saving about a place where you feel constantly cramped and your belongings are piled high because you don’t know what else to do with them. It’s advisable to decorate a small apartment intelligently for 2 reasons: to make space for your necessary possessions, and to make space for your mind – in other words, to make the place feel bigger.

We’ll list some specific tips – but first note that phrase: “necessary possessions”! Only you can judge which belongings fall into the “necessary” category, but if you know you’ll be moving into a small apartment, or you’ve been living in one for a while, it’s wise to get real about taking inventory, and clearing out the unnecessary. On to the tips:

Dividing a long, narrow space. Many city flats take this form, a long, un-demarcated room very probably ending in a window. The trick is to define sections by function, using modestly scaled furniture groups. Thus, a small table and a pair of chairs is a dining room, a sofa or love seat and armchair with an occasional table create a living room, a desk that pulls down from a wall unit or set of bookshelves becomes a home office. Angle a low bookcase to make a visual room divider. It may be useful to consider custom made furniture. Many flats have odd little nooks, or a space like a bay window that shouldn’t be wasted just because it doesn’t match standard sizes in furnishings. A custom-assembled modular shelf/storage unit, for instance, can fit the space exactly yet not bust your budget.

Adaptable furniture. At Chic Carpenta we are  good at multi-purpose furniture: card tables reversed to dining tables, chairs turned into library steps, benches concealed storage. And look for folding or convertible furniture, like custom sofas and daybeds. If you have folding chairs or a folding table, and they’re light-weight enough, hang them on hooks when not in use.

Avoid a cluttered look. Choose furniture with clean lines and not too much fiddly detail, and keep the scale down. A mirror or two will open things out and bring light in.

Use color to create visual flow. Uninterrupted pale tones are best for reflecting light and expanding the visual space. Do this with paint and fabrics, choosing and coordinating carefully. It often happens that when you reupholster a couch  it has an entirely different impact on the spatial feel of the room than it did before. Take advantage of this to get your existing furniture integrated with the modest space.

RE- Sofa makeover

Furniture is something that is constantly being used and yet, you rarely give it a second thought. As the years begin to add up, you are bound to notice some of the wear and tear accumulated from everyday use. Your initial thought when dropping into a drooping sofa or chair may be that it’s time for a new one. You may figure your couch gave you a good run, but now it’s time to throw in the towel. This, however, doesn’t have to be the case. You don’t need to purchase brand new furniture to get a pleasing upgrade. Furniture repair is a popular alternative for when any piece you own has been through the mill. Here are some furniture repair options to bring your favorite items back to life.

The more time you spend snuggled in your sofa, the more wear your couch is getting. It may get to a point where even a quick glance reveals indents that aren’t going anywhere. This is the point where most start thinking something needs to change. It is so much easier to replace a few cushions then trying to get a whole new couch. Purchasing new cushions will almost instantly renew your sofa. Along with the cushions, the springs in your sofa are also constantly under strain. After a while their integrity is going to start to weaken, making your couch look like it’s sagging under an invisible weight. Broken springs can be easily and cheaply replaced making your couch look like it’s never been used. Besides wanting an aesthetically pleasing look, comfort is priority in a couch.

No matter what type of fabric you have, it will begin to wear down after years of use. Leather is often a popular choice for living room sets. There is just something about leather that gives it a timeless look. Unfortunately, there also comes a time when it may begin to look worn and the color may fade from use. Instead of dropping a lot of money for an entirely new set of furniture, consider the many repair options.

A sofa fabric change may sound like a hassle, but it’s actually a viable option. Even new sofas were upholstered at one point; why not give your old sofa a makeover? Whether you like the fabric you had and are just looking to replace it, or you want an updated look the possibilities are endless. You can pay a visit to any number of fabric stores and pick exactly what you want. The cost of the fabric and labor combined is no doubt cheaper than a new couch.

Furniture repair is an option for any number of damages your furniture may have gone through. From little accidents caused by your kids or pets to smoke or water damage. Broken springs and missing parts, to any kind of eye sore stains. There may be specific things that you know you want to get fixed. On the other hand, there may be things you have overlooked or just don’t realize need to be checked out. Using all these touch ups and repairs together is likely to be cheaper than going out to buy an entirely new set of furniture. Give them some consideration and revamp your home for a reasonable price.
