Decorating on a budget

RE: decorating on a budget

Hi guy…..Im baaaaaack. Did you miss me?

Window treatments are essential in a bedroom since they add privacy, adjust the lighting, and maintain the temperature in your room etc

When it comes to window treatment majority of us always think in terms of curtains right?           I know, however, there are over 14 different types of window treatment to choose from apart from curtain (story for another day)

Since we are talking about affordability, we will stick with the very common option of curtain (drapes)

Sheer drapes (VOILE) tend to be significantly less expensive than your heavier window treatments (300 naira/yard) and they allow a lot more light into the room, even when they are closed. You can purchase them at just about anywhere along any major road in Lagos metropolis, and they are easy to install on your basic curtain rod.

You do need to be careful with sheer drapes because they are sheer (see thru), and therefore, not ideal options for privacy in your bedroom. However, they will work great for most families in the main living areas of the house: kitchen, living room, sitting room, entry, dining room, and wherever else you have windows.

Cheap Window Treatment Ideas 1 Make Your Own Drapes

If you have a sewing machine and basic proficiency, it is really easy to make your own inexpensive window treatments. All you need to purchase is the fabric, and you just need to hem the edges and sew loops onto the top (or slits through the top, if you prefer that method).

Cheap Window Treatment Ideas 2 Use Old Fabrics

Even cheaper than just making your own drapes with fabric you purchased is using old fabric you already have in your home. If you have some sheets for a size of bed that you no longer have, convert them into drapes for a room. Similarly, if you find yourself with tablecloths that would look better on windows, spoil yourself. Dig into your closet, boxes, Ghana must go or wherever you store old clothes. You should find one or more set of old aso-ebi (Ankara, kente, batik) that can be converted onto a cute curtain if that fails ask you mama. I remember converting an old agbada into a shower curtain once.

Cheap Window Treatment Ideas: Be Flexible

The most important thing to consider when looking for cheap window treatments is that you should be flexible. Your rooms don’t all have to match completely, and a funky look will give it character. As long as you like it, that’s all that really matters. Your curtains don’t have to touch the floor. Mid length curtains are in this season. And there will be in for a while.
